About The Nest

This main home structure is composed of three discrete units in a modified dog-trot arrangement designed to take advantage of the Florida climate. The main living area includes the Palm, a large living room with exposed scissor jointed ceiling and roof. The Palm is famed for its Palmetto fiber wall covering. Other rooms are the Snug, which is a library, den, and office space and the Retreat, that serves as a bedroom and bath. The Cuckoo is to the south of the living area and is a separate room used today as a bedroom and attached bath. The third section of The Nest is comprised of a dining room, a kitchen with a small nook, and the Lazarette, a storage and washing area. All the sections of the Nest are connected by porches and breezeways or halls. A hand-dug above-ground well dating to the 1880s and famous for its great-tasting water, lies a few yards west of the main porch.
