City of St. Petersburg’s Archaeological Parks Sites
The mission of the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation is to preserve, protect, maintain and enhance the city’s park lands and recreational facilities, engaging people in leisure activities that contribute to their quality of life. A number of archaeological and heritage sites are located on these lands, and as part of a preservation and management effort, these properties were mapped and documented using the latest in 3D survey technologies and virtual tour imaging strategies.
The 3D models and tours in this collection represent archaeological artifacts, landscape cartographic information, and visitor experience details for use in the classroom, on the web, and at the parks to improve interpretation of these important lands.
This public archaeology project aims to increase awareness and appreciation for the City’s cultural heritage. Park areas examined as part of this survey included: Abercrombie Park, Jungle Prada Park, Maximo Beach Park, Indian Mound Park, and the Kuttler tract addition to Abercrombie Park.
Virtual tours featuring archaeological and historical sites in the City’s parks are available, along with immersive 3D models of artifacts and other features. The tours and the annotated artifacts are all viewable on your computer or mobile device, and you can also use Virtual Reality tools to have more up-close exploration.
