Laser scanner to preserve details of Tampa’s historic Jackson House
WTVT Fox 13 follows the fieldwork and progress of the Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections (DHHC) as they digitally preserve and document the highly imperiled Jackson Rooming House in Tampa. A partnership between the USF Libraries and the Tampa Bay History Center (TBHC) is allowing for the latest in heritage preservation tools to be used at the site to record the structure for virtual reality, online and interpretive exhibit development. The Jim Crow Era boarding house that served as the home away from home to many African American travelers during segregation and had many famous musicians and visitors within its walls, is today dilapidated and in jeopardy of demolition. The USF and TBHC team is hoping to creating a lasting digital record and museum exhibition around the site thanks to new 3D and imaging approaches to preservation.
